Fresno’s Armenian community asked for the American government to step in and help after Christian Armenians living in the Syrian town of Kessab are attacked. Over 2,000 residents in Kessab were forced to flee after Muslim rebels broke into their homes, attacked businesses and destroyed churches. Armenians say Turkey was behind this attack; as they were during the Armenian Genocide in 1915.View the 30 minute story of the 2014 attacks as told by community members in Fresno.



The Ethics of Reconstructing Syria



The ethics of reconstructing Syria, which is estimated to carry a $300-billion price-tag, were debated at Chatham House in 2018. That year, In April, the Syrian government passed a law under which certain areas of the country will be designated redevelopment zones. Everyone living in them will have to move out. READ MORE.



THE BATTLE FOR KESSAB





1914 and 2014



Kessab is the only Armenian town in Syria, although other Syrian villages and cities have Armenian minorities. Perched on a hillside within sight of the Turkish frontier, its 2,000-plus inhabitants also include about five hundred Alawite Muslims and Arab Christians.
